Has anyone come across any new info on the PLAY TV and its release date here in AUS?

EB have it listed for "Nov 2009" but I haven't seen any mention of an aussie release anywhere else so I wouldn't trust that date. I think Sony have just forgotten about us :p

Confirmed it with Harvey Norman today while we were picking up our Prestige Edition MW2.

Not sure we will buy it now, PlayTV not the MW2. We have a HD recorder set up already and I guess we don't use it as much so might be a waste of cash if we get the PlayTV.

It's perfect for me, when my old TV died I decided to get a HD monitor instead of a new telly, since I really only used it for the PS3, most shows I download and watch on the PC. So now I can have a setup that functions the same as a normal TV, but cost 1/3 of the price :D

may i post a contrary view, before everyone spends their cash on these tv tuners?

they seem like an inexpensive option, with that very low purchase cost, but what about on-going costs?

for starters, we would need a much larger HDD (500GB or more) as HD video eats up disc space real fast .

power consumption. a PS3 might use 10 times the watts, a PVR would use.

the biggest cost would be from the extra Wear 'n Tear on your console.
getting a console repaired is not just expensive, but time wasting as well.
it can take many weeks to get a console repaired, plus they erase everything on your HDD in the process.

a DVD/HDD recorder might be a better long term option. many have twin HD tuners, and some burn to BLU-Ray disc. it's easier to get them repaired to. some repairer's pick it up; fix it, and return it to your door within 48hrs.

i'm not saying i wont ever get Play TV, ....what i am saying is, there's alot of things to consider beforehand.

Ive been looking around and found Harvey Norman have it for $148
I will be getting one, TiVo is over priced for what I want.I don't need the thing to automatically record my favorite shows.
It also can be integrated with my PSP for viewing on the go. Sounds cool..

Bloody hell, I should have known better than to go and buy something without researching first! I got one today for $160 from JB on my way home from work.

It's a Chrissie present for my wife :p

A large part of my decision to get it is due to the ridiculous lag in the guide on my TV, hopefully it will be better.

Don't feel so bad mate. I bought a PS2 for $99 yesterday thinking it was a saving on the normal price of $129.

Then EBGames listed PS2's (second hand) on the Mad Monday sale today for $68.

The wife said let it go.
