Due to the lack of such topic in the forum, I am making a topic on opensource game. to share and discuss news/opinions on opensource game.

I am aware that most forum members are not familiar with open source games so I will provide a list of these game so you can try out a few before you join the discussion. These listed games are stand alone games, not mod of commercial game, not emulator, not gaming tool, not game engine alone.

In the list, you should skip any genre that you don't like and you can read the description before you decide to try the game out.

These game are free [as in free speech] so don't hesitate to try them out:

    Real time strategy:
    • SpringRTS [Engine only, game below] Full game list
      • Zero-k [Recommended]: free, multiplatform, open-source RTS game where massive robot armies fight an endless conflict. It has a powerful interface allowing players precision control over high level economic, strategic and tactical decisions.
Evolution RTS:The gameplay is designed around the use of unit groups, and the mixture of your unit group often will determine how successful you are in battle, as opposed to churning out hundreds of the same unit continually.
Balanced Annihilation:gameplay develops in stages of progressively heavier units with a growing economy. Many strategies are viable in BA, including focusing on map control, aggression, defense, air power, sea power, or mobility. [may have copy right problem with original Total Annihilation] to download need one of the Universal downloader
Megaglest:an entertaining free (freeware and free software) and open source cross-platform 3D real-time strategy (RTS) game, where you control the armies of one of seven different factions: Tech, Magic, Egypt, Indians, Norsemen, Persian or Romans. The game is setup in one of 17 naturally looking settings, which -like the unit models- are crafted with great appreciation for detail. A lot of additional game data can be downloaded from within the game at no cost.
0 A.D.[Recommended][Alpha]: cross-platform real-time strategy (RTS) game of ancient warfare. It's a historically-based war/economy game that allows players to relive or rewrite the history of ancient civilizations, each depicted at their peak of economic growth and military prowess.
Warzone 2100:You command the forces of “The Project” in a battle to rebuild the world after mankind has almost been destroyed by nuclear missiles. The game offers campaign, multi-player and single-player skirmish modes, and an extensive tech tree. Famous for its modular design allow you to hand craft every unit to fit every situation. Its failing is in the too expansive tech tree which make thing confusing and clunky interface.

However, it is possible to hack into Dr. Lacroix's various robots and to take control of them via computer terminals. The nifty use of the robots and the combination of their characteristic special abilities enable Nikki to solve puzzles, overcome obstacles, and complete the level tasks.

As previously mentioned the interface of most games are not as high as many commercial game so if you are not feeling adventurous you can stick to the [Recommended] games which is quite mature and guaranteed to have adequate UI design.

It should also be said that these game should not be compare to big brand AAA games, but to indie games or low-mid range AAA games which have similar resource at their disposal. That is not to said that all open source game is inferior to AAA games, yet many of them truly leave much to be desired.

The list and recommendation are from my experience with open source game they are subjected to change as the discussion progress.

Please keep the discussion civil and productive. Your good will is very much appreciated.

And finally a quote attributed to Mark Twain [real author is in debate]

You can try answering these question to enter the discussion:

    • have you tried any recommended game [most likely you tried all]?
have any caught your interest? have you had any fun?
      have any exceed your expectation?
Have any fall short of your [already low] expectation?
have you tried any not recommended game? Are they any better?

    Thanks for the post.

Currently downloading CuboSphere, and was looking at The Butterfly Effect, but looked like it didn't quite get finished(but supposedly playable) and not updated in 2 or 3 years.

Might take a look at one or 2 others.

    Cheers,
    Max
