I have to go with Final Fantasy 7 as my favorite game of all-time.

I think it had some of the best music in the series, but it was the first game that I thought had such a storyline that got me into it. I genuinely wanted to see what happened to all the characters in the game and find out more about their storied pasts.

Not to mention, I just found Sephiroth to be QUITE the badass too...and I loves me a badass bad guy in a book/movie/game.

I loved the battle system, I loved being able to customize characters with the materia system...to this day I still love replaying it every now and then (which finding the time for is becoming less and less frequent).

For the PC, I would say the original Age of Empires. I spent hours playing that game. I once built a base accross an entire map consuming all resources.

For consoles, Chuck Rock, for the SNES. It was easy. It had no story. But I laughed my way through it.

If I was limited to just one game to choose it would have to be :

    Elite

    Other top contenders are:

    Wing Commander Series
X Wing / Tie Fighter Series

    Dune

Bards Tale Triology (the old ones not that 'rape my childhood' POS they put out a few years ago)

X-Com Series (specially the first two)

System Shock / System Shock 2 (Bio Shock wasn't bad either)

    Pirates

    Ultima Series (But mostly 4)

Turn Based Strategy Games in general (Half the stuff put out by SSI, SSG and games like Civ, Simcity etc)

BG was utterly awesome when it was first released. I couldn't believe that whatever you equipped your party members with actually showed on the character! :p

I spent a lot of time in Daggerfall. Maybe I will try it in an emulator.

Right now, I am thinking that Blood Bowl that just came out is my favorite game. It is exactly like the tabletop version but you don't have to argue over the rules or skills. And the campaign mode is pretty cool, though it doesn't seem to be a good a challenge as a human (what AI that doesn't cheat can be really), but it is nice to play a game during breakfast to start my day. Becoming a habit with me now... ;)

My favourite game of all time is Final Fantasy VIII back on the original Playstation.

Back in the day though, Mutant League Football on the Megadrive was awesome fun. I hope they bring it onto the 360 or something so that I can play it again with better graphics.

This was a fun read. It appears to have changed from 'best ever' to outstanding games. I would be hard pressed to name one game that I considered the best. Here are some that stood out for me on different platforms:

Atari 400: Star Raiders, Sub Commander (Broderbund), Temple of Apshai
C64: Elite, Racing Destruction Kit, M.U.L.E.
Amiga: TechnoCop, Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back, Lemmings
PC: too many to name. Each has had certain properties that stood out. Had a lot of fun with Warcraft 2 and LAN parties. Lot of Counterstrike and other FPS games. Spent a lot of time hiding under digital water in the sub simulations...
    Arcade: Sinistar, Rampage

Yeah! Racing Desctruction Set on C64 was great, used to build a track for half an hour just to race it for 5 mins against my sister... good times!

Consoles: Mario 64 , FF7 , Blades of Steel , and as was mentioned above, Tomb Raider 1 for ps1.

PC: Arena The Elder Scrolls , Duke Nukem 3D !!!!!

There are so many great games though, this is the kind of topic where 2 hrs later you will be buying grocerys somewhere and all of the sudden remember some archaic masterpiece that you wish you mentioned.
